What's new in Autodesk Maya
The Maya 2026 release is the successor to the 2024 and 2025 versions and offers various improvements and new features. Below is an overview:
- New modelling updates: These include updates to the Boolean node and a new dialogue box for setting units for STL files. A new mesh mode has been added to the Boolean node, allowing your results to be calculated using volumetric meshing.
- New dialogue box: use the new dialogue box for converting units to import and export STL files.
- Share shots: with Animate in Context, shot-based artists can view the shots around their active scene directly in Maya.
- Improved Rigging and Character Animation: think improved shape training, customisable shape analysis, the new Lean Surface option and more.
- Mesh Compare: You can now apply Mesh Compare to visualise the difference between two meshes using a heat map.
- Default surface shader: Use OpenPBR as the default surface shader in Maya! OpenPBR surface shading is a step towards greater convergence in the industry and more efficient workflows for 3D content creators.
- Arnold for Maya: Maya 2026 comes with MtoA 5.5.0, which introduces Arnold 7.4.0.0 core.
- Bifrost Ocean Simulation System: Bifrost 2.13.0.0 includes the ability to simulate fluids directly in the graph, along with many other new features.
- USD for Maya - Light thinking: USD for Maya 0.31 (Maya 2026) now supports light linking for better light control, lets you control lighting through a selected light, offers automatic conversion of axes and units on import/export, and allows you to search for prims in the Outliner.
- LookdevX (Improvements): The latest update to Lookdev for Maya introduces improved publishing workflows, support for relative paths, and a new generative textures API. OpenPBR is now the default material with better interoperability and support in MaterialX.
- Flow Retopology: Flow Retopology is now included with your installation of Maya 2026. Flow Retopology works just like Maya's Retopologise tool and simplifies complex geometry, making it easier to work with. Flow Retopology uses remote cloud computing to perform mesh operations, allowing you to continue working in Maya while the task is completed.
